Introduction:

Fort Aguada has witnessed a valuable history of the Goan freedom struggle. It has seen voyages of different invaders entering Goa with an intention to conquer it. It has been the most crucial and a prized fort in history because of its strategic location and architecture that envelops the complete panoramic peninsula at the southwestern tip of Bardez. Fort Aguada was the most prized fort of Portuguese because it sat enveloping the entire panorama at the southwestern tip of Bardez. It has been strategically built on the mouth of Mandovi river and stands tall against the roaring waves of Arabian Sea. It was used as the chief defence of the Portuguese against the Dutch.

Aguada Jail (The lower fort) was used as a prison primarily during Salazar administration when, as the legends claim, it was particularly used for Salazar’s political opponents. It was the largest prison in Goa till 2015. From being a vessel point for Portuguese in the 16th Century, to a prison till 2015, to now being converted into a museum, every structure of Aguada Jail has a story to tell. The structure built in the 17th century has now been renovated and opened for tourists as a museum to showcase Goa’s freedom struggle. The museum pays tribute to the sacrifices of all those who were involved in Goa’s freedom. The museum was inaugurated by Shri. Narendra Modi on 19th of December, 2021.
